How Our Scholarship Helped a Computer Design Student

1. Can you briefly introduce yourself?

I'm 21 years old, I come from Duga Resa, and I'm studying in the second year at the Technical University of Zagreb. When enrolling at university, I chose the computer design program. So far, I've learned HTML, SVG, and I'm currently learning UX Design and graphic techniques — Photoshop, Design Illustration, and Python.

2. Why did you choose this particular program?

I've been fascinated by computers since childhood, and I already knew I wanted to work in IT. I showed great interest in programming, and at first I actually wanted to be a programmer, but as the years went by, I realized I was also good at the visual side. Since I was 13, I've been working in Photoshop and editing videos. When I realized I had the opportunity to enroll in computer design, I didn't think twice.

3. Where do you see yourself in the future?

When it comes to the future, I hope to have the opportunity to work in my field — that's something I really want. I would love to create websites and applications. Given that abroad is quite accommodating towards people with disabilities, I still hope that the situation here will change and that I'll have the opportunity to work in Croatia.

4. What motivates you?

In high school, my motivation was to get into my desired university, while today it's the fact that I love what I learn and do. Even when tasks are simple, I like to create something I'll be proud of later, rather than just getting it done.

5. How much does achieved success motivate you?

Quite a lot. When my book was published, it motivated me to keep writing. When I enrolled in computer design, it pushed me to return to a field I thought would just be a hobby. Every time something like that happens, I gain more self-confidence, and I always try to surpass what I've already achieved.

6. How did the KnowIT scholarship help you?

The scholarship really helped me a lot and I'm grateful for it. I had to pay for a room in the student dormitory, so the majority of the funds went to that, while the remaining portion helped me become more financially independent — I was able to get software licenses and I'm currently using the Maxon package that I was able to secure thanks to the scholarship. I also helped my parents so they could cover my bills.

7. Do you have a message for young people?

To young people like me, I would say: never allow anyone to tell you no. By that I mean, if someone tells you that you won't succeed at something, don't give up because of those words and firmly believe in yourself and your desires. The secret of my success is that many people believed in me and still do.
